Prior to the Coast Guard, the United States Life-Saving Service was established in 1848, and was developed from local humanitarian efforts to assist and save the lives of shipwrecked mariners and passengers. Dotting along the coastlines of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, the Great Lakes also had stations and mainly were to support shipping vessels as leisure boating was not yet a big pastime.
